Chief Minister Atishi conducted a surprise inspection of the Wazirabad Barrage on Wednesday, addressing the escalating toxic pollution in the Yamuna River. She highlighted the impact of high ammonia levels in the water, which have adversely affected water treatment plants in Delhi.
Allegations Against BJP Governments
During her visit to the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant, Atishi accused the BJP-led governments in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh of discharging untreated industrial waste into the Yamuna. She stated that this pollution is being used as a “weapon against Delhi.”
Rising Pollution Levels and Air Quality Concerns
Atishi reiterated her concerns about the increasing pollution levels in the Yamuna and the deteriorating air quality in the capital, attributing these issues to what she termed the BJP’s “dirty politics.” She claimed that untreated water is being channeled into the Yamuna through drains in areas like Wazirabad and Kalindi Kunj, turning these regions into toxic drains, especially during the Chhath Puja festival.
Impact on Water Treatment Plants
“The ammonia level in the river has reached 3 parts per million (ppm) since Tuesday, making it impossible to treat water at the Wazirabad plant,” the Chief Minister reported. She also noted that the Sonia Vihar and Bhagirathi water treatment plants are facing similar challenges.
Conclusion
Atishi concluded by asserting that the BJP is undermining Delhi’s well-being by using Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as tools in this pollution crisis.
