A portion of the under-construction terminal at Rajahmundry Airport, located in Madhurapudi, collapsed during ongoing development work. Fortunately, no workers were present at the time, avoiding any injuries. This incident has raised concerns about the safety protocols and supervision involved in the airport’s expansion. Local residents have suggested that the collapse could have been caused by inadequate quality control during construction.
The expansion project is aimed at addressing the airport’s growing passenger traffic. The new terminal, built at a cost of Rs 350 crore, will cover an additional 17,029 square meters, increasing the total terminal area to 21,094 square meters. Once completed, the terminal will handle 2,100 passengers per hour and accommodate 30 lakh passengers annually.
Several modern amenities will be introduced as part of the expansion, including 28 check-in counters, four conveyor belts, eight X-BIS machines, and three aerobridges. The airport will also feature improved facilities for people with disabilities in accordance with the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan initiative. Additionally, a parking facility for approximately 600 cars will be available.
Rajahmundry Airport currently connects key cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru, with 126 weekly flights. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to enhance regional connectivity and promote Rajahmundry as a significant cultural and tourist destination, contributing to the state’s economic and social development.
