Rain Disrupts Day One of Kanpur Test: Bangladesh at 107-3 Against India

Date:

Match Summary

KANPUR, India (AP) — The first day of the second test match between India and Bangladesh was halted by rain, with Bangladesh finishing at 107 for 3 when play was stopped on Friday.

Limited Overs Due to Rain

Only 35 overs were bowled throughout the day. Bangladesh reached 74 for 2 at lunch but faced interruptions after the break. The team resumed play 15 minutes late due to a light shower, but only managed 45 minutes of action before poor light forced the players off the field. A subsequent downpour made it impossible to continue.

Key Performances

Ravichandran Ashwin made a crucial breakthrough, dismissing Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 31 runs. Initially given out caught at short leg, the decision was overturned to leg-before-wicket after a review. Shanto faced 57 balls and hit six fours before his dismissal.

Mominul Haque ended the day unbeaten on 40, while Mushfiqur Rahim contributed 6 runs in an unbroken partnership of 27 runs off 37 balls by stumps.

Bowling Highlights

India, opting to field in overcast conditions for the first time in a home test since 2015, saw pace bowler Akash Deep shine with figures of 2 for 14. He struck twice in the first session after play was delayed by an hour due to a wet outfield.

Bangladesh struggled initially, with opener Zakir Hassan facing 24 balls for no runs before being caught at gully off Deep in the ninth over. Yashasvi Jaiswal took a low one-handed catch. Deep also dismissed Shadman Islam for 24 runs.

Series Context

India currently leads the two-match series after a decisive victory in the first test in Chennai by 280 runs.
